Who is God? Who is YHWH?
There are so many man-made gods in our world giving us a lot of choices of who and what to serve. There is only one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He is the only living God. We read throughout the Bible about the one true God, and we also learn about other choices made by man. Let’s take a few minutes and learn a little about the one true God that can change your life.
Welcome to today’s segment of
Did you know?
Who is YHWH?
Did you know that our Heavenly Father has a long list of names? Some are in the Bible, some are man-made. It kind of reminds me of how we as humans, have nicknames. It’s a fascinating study and once I learned the Hebrew names, I wondered why they were totally ignored in all Bible translations.
After prayer and consideration, I feel compelled to use His Hebrew names. The original scrolls were written in Hebrew and in that language, there is no “J”? That means in Bible times and in Jesus’ life, He was not called Jesus. He was called Yeshua, our Messiah. He also had a number of nicknames. The Hebrew name for the Holy Spirit is Ruach HaKodesh. So when you hear me refer to Ruach, you know I’m referring to the Holy Spirit by His Hebrew name.
Because there were many gods and idols that were worshipped in the Old Testament, the One true God was not called God, He was called YHWH. Y-H-W-H
Those are the English letters that translate from the original Hebrew letters. Pronounced in Hebrew is: Yad-Hay-Vav-Hey
YHWH said a number of times in the Torah that His name is: I AM.
He also called Himself The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Hebrew for Lord is Adonai. The various versions of God’s word use different names for Him. Regardless, He is the one true God! Some Hebrew names for the One True God you might recognize, others you may not.
Adonai = the Lord
Elohim = the all-powerful creator
El olam = the Eternal God
El Roi = the God who sees me
El Shaddai = God almighty
Immanuel = God with us or I Am
Overtime, YHWH & Yah morphed into Jehovah. You might have heard of these:
Jehovah Jireh = The Lord will provide
Jehovah Nissi = The Lord is my banner
Jehovah Rapha = The Lord who heals
Jehovah Rohi = The Lord is my shepherd
Jehovah Shalom = The Lord is Peace
Just to name a few.
YHWH means I am. He is. He is all. He is all that we need.
What a delightful thought!
I invite you to search the Truth yourself. Test it. (1 Thessalonians 5:21)
Please go to your Bible and study the entire story. See firsthand what His word says and what He wants to show you. I always check several versions to allow the Spirit to show me the difference and truth. I recommend you do the same.
Enjoy pondering that thought today!
God bless you
