What happened in the Upper Room with Jesus?

Why did Jesus wash the disciple’s feet?

There’s more to the story than meets the eye. Why did Jesus wash the disciple’s feet? Let’s find out:

John 13
Yeshua was aware that the Father had put everything in his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. So he rose from the table, removed his outer garments, and wrapped a towel around his waist. Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and wipe them off with the towel wrapped around him. He came to Peter, who said to him, “Lord! You are washing my feet?” Yeshua answered him, “You don’t understand yet what I am doing, but in time you will understand.”

Let’s touch on some schools of thought on why Yeshua washed their feet:
1. To show His love for His disciples, His family that He adopted.
2. A depth of love for His chosen ones.
3. An example of how He cares for His chosen ones.
4. He loved His disciples till the end. He experienced the same feelings we feel, so He was surely sad to leave them.
5. Kind of like when our kids grow up and leave home and parents experience separation anxiety hoping they taught them everything they needed to know to go out into the world alone.
6. To show complete humility. Which is necessary to please the Father.
7. We must become and remain humble.
8. There is no place for pride.
9. To be an example of how we should be with others. Loving and humble.
9. He was showing us what love looks like.
10. He was about to pay the ultimate price for us to be His forever.
11. He has set us apart.
12. Peter trying to deny this action had significant ramifications if He didn’t allow Jesus to do this.
13. It was the symbolism, not that the feet needed washing
14. Signifying they were clean to Him; clean for service to spread the Good News.
15. His love was such to forgive all sinners.
16. He washed Judas’ feet giving him one more chance, even though He knew that Judas had to do what he did so that the Father’s word would be fulfilled by Jesus dying for our sins.
17. Showing them how this was a humble honoring act of service like the woman who poured expensive oil on his head, and the woman that wiped her tears with her hair cleansing his feet.
18. He was doing what His father had Moses do to Aaron and his sons in Leviticus 8:6, when YHWH told Moses to wash their feet as an act of humbleness and honor.
19. Washing of feet was the lowliest of jobs back then and considered a horrible job.
20. He was setting an example by doing this lowly job showing us that there is no job to low that we shouldn’t be willing to do to serve Him.

Why did Jesus wash the disciples feet?

Have you ever wondered why Jesus washed the disciples feet? I have always found this story to be so moving and powerful. Here was the King of Kings, stooping down to perform a menial task for His followers. And not only that, but He was setting an example for them to follow. In today’s world, we can often get so caught up in our own lives and our own concerns that we forget to serve others. But Jesus reminds us that servanthood is at the heart of what it means to follow Him. When we serve others, we are following in His footsteps and showing His love to the world. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, take a moment to think about how you can serve someone else. It will make all the difference!

Jesus washes the disciples feet to show them that He is their servant

Jesus came as a servant of all mankind, so that He could take on the burden of our sins and free us from it. He showed this by humbling himself even further, and demonstrating obedience to his mission in a powerful way, by washing the feet of His disciples. This is an incredible demonstration of Jesus’ willingness to not just speak scripture but to make sure his actions followed His words. His example shows us that we should never be too proud to serve another, and reminds us that we should always put others before ourselves. Let us look at the example set for us by Jesus and act with humility, grace, and service towards each other.

Jesus washes the disciples feet to teach them about humility and servanthood

Jesus humbled himself to the disciples in a powerful demonstration when He washed their feet. His gesture was meant to teach them about humility and servanthood, and it is an example for us still today. As followers of our Messiah, we should strive to imitate Him: let’s pursue humility and selflessness by choosing to serve others daily. As Jesus said Himself: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45 ESV). Jesus calls us to put aside our pride and empty ourselves so that others may be filled. Let’s practice faith in action by leaning into the examples He left for us!

Jesus washes the disciples feet to prepare them for ministry

Jesus is our ultimate example of servant leadership. In John 13:12-17, we see Him washing the feet of His disciples to prepare them for their upcoming ministry work. This selfless act intimates for the disciples, and us, that ministering to others requires us to humble ourselves and become servants ourselves – to cleanse and make oneself pure from the sinful world. We are being asked to lean into our role as carriers of His word and grace with a devotion that transcends our own selfish desires and ambitions. Jesus placed Himself at great risk as He washed His disciples’ feet, just as we must take risks in order to spread His love throughout the world – through both word and deed – so all can know and understand His grace, mercy and truth.

Jesus washes the disciples feet as an act of love

Jesus demonstrated the power of sacrificial love when he washed His disciples’ feet. Such a humble and lowly service of complete surrender symbolizes Jesus’ profound commitment to the well-being of those who followed Him. At the time, it was unthinkable for a teacher, let alone a rabbi, to perform such a menial task as foot washing. And yet, Jesus embraced the act with open arms and an unparalleled humility that has been unmatched in all ages since. He instructed us that this is our example to follow – we should serve each other deeply out of a true heart of love, respecting and honoring every human being regardless of their station in life. May we all be inspired by Jesus’ example and blessed to strive towards giving love unconditionally to everyone around us.

Jesus washes the disciples feet to demonstrate his obedience to God’s will

Jesus was both humble and devoted to God’s will when He washed His disciples’ feet during the Last Supper. This act of servitude, which was often performed by a low-ranking household servant, proved that Jesus was living out his mission to do the will of God by not just teaching about it but by humbling himself to obey it. We can also look to this example as a source of encouragement to trust in God’s plan for us too. During times when it is difficult for us to be obedient to His will, we must remember that Jesus set a powerful example of selfless submission toward God and that He is with us every step of our journey.

Jesus washes the disciples feet to show them that He is their servant. He wants to teach us about humility and servanthood. This act also prepares us for ministry. Jesus loves us enough to wash our feet, an act of complete servitude. In doing this, Jesus obeys God’s will. If we follow His example, trust that Jesus loves us unconditionally, no matter what mental health circumstances we are facing in our lives. We can also trust the Father in all things and know that He has a perfect plan for us even when faced with trials and hardships (Psalm 55:22). If we have strayed from Him, we can always turn back to the Father through repentance (2 Chronicles 7:14). And finally, we should study the whole Bible from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation so that we can grow closer in our relationship with our Messiah who has so much to teach us in His word. (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
