Passover 2024

April 22, 2024

Begins at sundown

(If you missed the blog from last Friday on why all Jesus’ followers should be observing Passover, follow this link and read it too. It gives lots to think about, answers many questions, and
raises others for you to search out with the Holy Spirit.)

“The LORD’s Passover
begins at sundown
on the fourteenth day of the first month.”
Leviticus 23:5

Jesus is our Passover Lamb that was sacrificed for our sins.
1Corinthians 5:7

If you are interested in honoring Jesus by observing Passover this year, but don’t know what to do, this is a good place to start; keep it simple. Passover isn’t just about the great Exodus of God’s people from Egypt, it has always pointed us to Jesus. The spotless Passover Lamb that was required on the first Passover was a shadow-type of what would be required for our sins to be forgiven, Jesus, our spotless Lamb of God, who God planned all along to send to save us.

In Exodus 12 we learn of the first Passover and get greater detail in Leviticus 23. It is in the Torah books of the Bible that we learn what the Feasts of God are, who should observe them, and for how long. It is through studying the whole story, the entire Holy Bible, that you learn that God’s Feasts all point to Jesus, and they are meant for all God’s followers to observe them forever. If you are a follower of Jesus, God’s Feasts are for you to follow as well. They are a gift and a blessing that you have been taught were not for you at all. Time for truth; God’s truth.

When is the real Passover?

From the beginning of time, God intentionally planned for Jesus’ death and resurrection to take place during His commanded annual Passover Feast that began with Moses and His people in Egypt; we will learn more in following blogs. At the time of the original Passover, God created a new calendar (Exodus 11 & 12:1, Leviticus 23). Please read these chapters to get the whole story.

Currently, the Holy Spirit is causing many to question and learn what God’s original calendar is. Some interesting things are being discovered about His calendar that we have not been taught (do your research); it can be a bit confusing. For this Passover, allow me to give you a very basic example to compare God’s original calendar to calendars we currently use today. The New Year began as Moses and the people were leaving Egypt, according to scripture, that would be our April. Based on other scriptural factors you can research, according to the Hebrew calendar, Passover was determined this year to be at sundown April 22, 2024.

God and His Word have been a source of debate forever. There are varied thoughts and opinions over when God’s calendar begins and when the Feasts actually take place. As with everything, rather than get caught up in differences of opinions; stay focused on Jesus and do what the Holy Spirit tells you to do for you and your family. This is not an area for arguing; the whole point is to try to observe God’s Feasts that are for all His followers the best you can. He knows your heart.

Obedience, Not “works”

On that first night of Passover for the Hebrews in Egypt, God was sending His tenth plague; He was going to kill all the first born, including livestock. God told Moses to have His people paint the blood of a spotless lamb over their door before that night. By having this blood over their doors, the angel of death would “pass over” them and look to find the doors without the blood of a spotless lamb. (This is a clue that this represents what Jesus would do for us many years later, cover us with His spotless blood. This is also a sign of what will happen at the end of time. Those with the blood of Jesus, the Mark of God, their life will be spared).

Consider this: If anyone had decided that night that they would pray or make special food, or come up with an alternate plan to help God to make sure their life would be spared, it would not have worked. Altering God’s plan is an act of disobedience to Him (1Samuel 15:22). This is a great example to remind us that good people who go to church and do “good” things for others but don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus, won’t be going to Heaven. You can’t alter His plan, you can’t add or take away from it, and then expect your plans to have the same result; sparing your life. Having a personal relationship with Jesus is the only way; His way or NO way. The Holy Bible doesn’t tell us anyone tried to change the plan that first night; they were in awe of God’s nine plagues up to this point. However, God is showing us why we must do things His way, not ours.

It’s all about Jesus. You can’t save yourself by your works and ideas. Even if the Hebrews had spent the night praying, without the blood of the lamb over them, the angel of death would have reached them and slain their first born. Make sense? You can’t pray your way out of this; only the blood of Jesus can save you.

Peter reminds us many years later of the importance of the blood of the lamb over us:
“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.” 1Peter 1:18-21

Jesus the Passover Lamb

Observing Passover does not get you to Heaven, Jesus does.

By observing Passover today, as a follower of Jesus, you are honoring Him as you remember His sacrifice for your salvation. In the process of being obedient to God and observing His Feasts for all His followers, you can feel a deeper level of His love that you haven’t experienced before. He blesses those who obey Him. Observing Passover and His other Feasts as He commanded is blessed obedience to Him and He will reward you.

When Jesus shared His last Passover meal with His disciples, the cup He passed around represented the cup of redemption. He is the Redeemer and His death would solidify that promise to redeem the lost souls who follow Him. God has us observe this Feast every year to remember the physical deliverance of God’s people from Egypt, and to remember the spiritual deliverance of God’s people through Jesus the Messiah, our Redeemer.

Once you understand what God is teaching in scripture, you can’t un-see it. Suddenly you want to know about all His special Feasts and what they mean. Celebrating and observing Passover with God is indescribably peaceful. His Feasts are a gift to us. Any follower of Jesus should be observing His Feasts that He gave us to remember, and to prepare for His coming; each Feast has a very specific meaning. Saying yes to God’s gifts will change your life!

For anyone to change God’s Word on how and when His death should be remembered is considered by God to be disobedience; according to scripture, not me.

To get started:

  • You can do an internet search on Passover Feast celebration to get different ideas on how people celebrate it personally.
  • There are many “traditions and rituals” for God’s Feasts, but I recommend sticking to the details God instructed in scripture. We are to follow His instructions, not “man’s.” Moses did not make a big production nor did Jesus. Keep it simple. Follow scripture.
  • You do not have to sacrifice a lamb to put blood over your door. Those who observe Passover these days typically put a swath of red cloth over their door to signify the blood of Jesus. You can dress it up or keep it simple.
  • Have a family dinner on the first night (if possible, if not, choose a night during that week) and read the scriptures aloud of what happened on Passover in Exodus 12, and again with Jesus and the disciples in Matthew 26. One person can read or you can take turns reading different sections so that all can participate.
  • Have fun! This will change your life.

May God bless you and keep you.
