Learning the Parable of the Net
Matthew 13:47-50
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
This one is easy to understand
And oh so sad.
In this story, the world is the sea. The entire population of people on this earth is the fish. The net is the gospel. Followers of Yeshua and lovers of YHWH are fishers of men spreading the gospel to everyone. Yeshua tells them when to let the net down when to share. If they spread the gospel without His leading, the net comes back empty. As a fisher would know, it is not uncommon to catch not only fish, but also things not for eating as well. While the nets are out gathering, the fisher can’t tell what is in the net. Everything is caught up together. Once the nets are drawn back in, the fishers have to separate the good fish from the rest.
Let’s dig a little deeper…
The Bible is full of parables that teach us important truths. Some are more well-known than others, but each one has something valuable to say. This one contains a powerful message for all of us; this parable speaks to the heart of who we are as women.
What is the parable of the net?
The parable of the net is a teaching from Yeshua found in Matthew 13:47-50 that reminds us that God will ultimately separate the good from the bad. “So it will be at the end of the age when the angels come out to take action and they will divide between those who are evil and the righteous and cast them into a fiery furnace.” These words have been told to us as both a warning to remind us not to live sinful lives, but also as encouragement to remember all our righteous deeds will bring forth God’s grace and mercy on judgement day. In that place where justice is served there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth for those who chose darkness over light throughout their life on earth. Don’t let that be you. Hell was not created for God’s people.
How does the parable of the net apply to our lives today?
The parable of the net is a great reminder for us to turn back to God, staying focused on His Word and not being easily swept away by the ever-changing patterns of this world. It calls to mind Yeshua’s directive to follow Him instead of striving after what this broken sinful world offers us. This parable can serve as a powerful tool in our lives today if we turn our focus from accumulating all that the world values temporarily and instead commit ourselves fully to laying our foundations on the rock of Yeshua’s steadfast and unchanging love. No matter how chaotic and unpredictable things seem, this parable serves as an important source of encouragement pointing us back to God’s truth that holds true in every season.
What are some practical ways we can live out the parable of the net in our daily lives?
In this parable, Yeshua speaks to us about our daily lives and encourages us to live out our faith in Him. Practically speaking, applying Yeshua’s teachings in real life means making conscious decisions that reflect our faith and what we have learned from His Word. We can show love and compassion for those suffering around us, using the resources God has given us to demonstrate His generosity and grace. We can live with a generous heart, trusting that He can provide enough for our needs and those of others. We can also be proactive about seeking out opportunities to share God’s love with others and always keep an open heart to how He might be calling us into action. As we seek Him in prayer each day, He will bring forth good fruit from these practical ways of living out this parable in our lives.
How can we encourage others to turn to Yeshua and study His whole Bible?
We do not have the power or ability to change someone’s heart, it is God alone that can do that. But it is our responsibility to share with others the Good News of Yeshua and His truly miraculous life-changing power that He holds for us. There is nothing more exciting than a transformed life; one empowered by the love of God, faith in Him and a deep-seated desire to study his Word and obey it. You can help people turn to Yeshua by loving them as He does, actively listening, praying for them, giving them grace at all times, and gently pointing them to His Word for instruction and fulfillment. Above all else, remember it must start with us loving God first, embracing hope and then we will be able to love others as ourselves—like Yeshua did!
The parable of the net is a story with many layers of meaning that can be applied to our lives today. We see that God is patient and merciful, even when we make mistakes. He also wants us to grow in wisdom and knowledge so that we can live according to His will. This requires taking time to study the whole Bible, from Genesis 1:1 to the last word in Revelation. As we do this, we will develop a close relationship with Him and learn how to apply His Word to our daily lives. If you are struggling today, know that God is waiting for you with open arms. Turn back to Him in repentance and trust that He will help you through whatever circumstance you are facing. Encourage others around you to do the same!
The same as the end times, Yeshua is telling us in this parable that the gospel is available to all, but when it is time, He will separate His believers from the non-believers. He’s leaving us together for now so that we can spread His light and love. Stay focused on His plan for you.
God bless you.
