Learning the Parable of the Pearl
Matthew 13:45-46
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
People spend their entire lives trying to find love, joy, and peace, by acquiring pearls of earthly wisdom, riches, huge homes, luxury cars, fine jewelry, and more. These kinds of pearls bring no real joy. They perish. They wither away. All the striving, hard work, and stress for things that can’t make us happy, to impress people we don’t even really like. Having Yeshua in our life is the most costly pearl of all. He’s all that matters. Our relationship with Him is what determines our eternity. He is the only one that can bring us true joy.

Have you ever found a pearl? Something so beautiful and rare, yet so unexpected? There’s something about this little parable that just feels so personal and powerful.
When I think about my own life, there have been times when I’ve found pearls- those moments or people who are just so special and valuable to me. And like the man in the story, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep them close by.

Yeshua tells a parable about a man who finds a pearl of great value
The parable of the pearl of great value, told by Yeshua in the gospel, speaks to tremendous worth and true joy. When the man stumbles upon the pearl he quickly recognizes that no price is too great, and that nothing else matters but this one precious find. As believers, we can understand what Yeshua meant when He spoke of such a noble discovery. It alludes to our own search for something of utmost value, an unchanging truth that offers us guidance and completeness; it is faith in Yeshua Himself! Though life brings challenges, trials, and temptations that impede our progress, we should persevere and strive to obtain His wisdom. In doing so we shall find spiritual riches beyond measure: a free gift from God that far exceeds any earthly commodity.
The man sells everything he has to buy the pearl
The man’s choice to give up all he had to obtain the pearl was a brave one, and though it may have seemed risky, it could not have been easy. It might be easy to think of him as foolish, but instead we should recognize that his willingness to sacrifice deeply for something worthwhile is an example from which we can draw inspiration. His courage, along with faith and trust in God, resulted in the kind of reward that no amount of gold or silver could provide—the pleasure of curiosity fulfilled! As scripture says, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by water . . . It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.” (Jeremiah 17:7–8) May each of us give our all for that which provides us lasting joy!
The moral of the story is that we should be willing to give up everything for what is truly valuable – our relationship with God
The Bible is clear: our relationship with God should be the most important thing in our lives. He should have first priority over all other things in our lives – no matter how much we may desire and pursue worldly goals. When we put God first, He will lead us and fulfill our needs according to His plans for us. And often, that means sacrificing our own desires in order to hold onto what is truly valuable in life – the unshakable bond of faith with God. We must remain willing to yield up all our possessions, including status and wealth, when they begin interfering with our devotion to Him. By making this commitment we are blessed beyond measure as we go through life here on earth and assured of an eternity spent with God when it is done.
We should treasure the things of God above all else
Our lives should reflect the priorities of God. We should value relationship with Him, His Word, and our purpose to be His light and spread the Good News. We should seek to use our treasures here on earth in such a way that reflects God’s character and glory. This doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy life’s blessings; instead, let’s joyfully accept them as an expression of God’s love for us. May we always remember that even the seemingly little things are gifts from the Lord and carry big value when stewarded well. With gratitude in our hearts, lets choose to treasure all things of God above all else!
Application questions for you to consider at the end of the post
At the end of this post, consider these application questions. What practical steps or actionable items can I implement today to work towards spiritual growth? How can I best rely on God’s grace and strength each day to turn away from sins that might entice me? Take time to seek Him in prayer and His word and ask Him how you could practically live out your faith. Run toward what He has called you to! And finally, reflect on the ways you have seen God provide for you. There is always something encouraging and joyful to behold even in the most unexpected places of our lives – may we never take those glimpses for granted.
The man in Yeshua’s parable gave up everything he had to obtain the pearl. We, too, should be willing to give up everything for what is truly valuable—our relationship with God. This doesn’t mean that we need to sell all our possessions and live on the streets. But it does mean that we should treasure the things of God above all else. When sin enters our lives and causes us to stray from God, it may seem like a good idea at the time. But eventually, we will realize that it’s not worth it. We need to repent and turn back to the Father. And when hard times come our way, we need to trust Him and know that He has our best interests at heart—even if we don’t understand His ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). If you’re not sure where to start in your journey back to God, why not begin by reading through the Bible from Genesis 1:1 all the way to Revelation? As you do, ask God to reveal Himself to you in a new and deeper way.
And guess what?
What’s truly amazing is you don’t have to beg, borrow, or steal to get Him. We don’t deserve Him- but He makes Himself available for us. There is nothing we can do to earn this “pearl”. We are saved by grace. He died for us so that we can live. Be like the merchant in this parable. If you are searching, recognize that Yeshua is your answer. And he is worth giving up everything for. The merchant gave up everything for this one pearl. This means he didn’t need any other pearls- Just the one!
