Why did God flood the earth?

by | Manna Moments: Noah

Today we are going to park in Genesis 6:5-7 and see what God has for us.

Why did God decide to flood the earth

What could possibly be so bad to make Him flood the entire earth and everything He created and loved?

“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” Genesis 6:5-7

Wow, let’s pause a second and let that sink in…Whew…That is so sad to me. How sad He must have been. This passage doesn’t say that He made a mistake. He regretted making humans at that point because He wanted them to live righteously. They “chose” sin over Him. He was disappointed like any Father would be when their children make bad choices.

If you back up to Genesis 1:31, it says,God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.” He was happy he made humans. He could have created us to have to serve Him. But in His infinite Love for us, He chose to give us the choice to be in relationship with Him and to honor Him in our living. Now, in verse 6 we see, He regrets making humans,  and would destroy them and everything He enjoyed creating in the beginning.

Imagine what that must have been like for our loving Heavenly Father to have regrets that severe. Circumstances would have to be extreme in the world. A world consumed with sin. People living the way they wanted to, worshiping who and what they wanted, instead of their creator. People fighting and doing things their own way, with no regard to God.

Wait

That sounds familiar…what does this scenario remind you of?

This would be a great time to stop and reflect on our world today. It’s also a great time to stop and pray for our nation; for this entire world. As we will discuss later –  Adonai made a covenant with all living things that He would never flood the earth again. He graciously sent His son Jesus our Messiah for our redemption and salvation.

Where is your heart today? Do you have a strong relationship with our Heavenly Father? Maybe you feel consumed with sin-or the consequences of your sin. Maybe you’ve worshipped your interests, maybe you’re fighting to do things your own way with no regard for your Heavenly Father. Maybe you feel like you are not worthy to ask God for anything at this point.

Graciously – Adonai has given us redemption and salvation from our sin. He has forgiven us. The Bible says in Jeremiah 31:34, “He will forgive us of our iniquities and remembers our sins no more.” By repenting and accepting Jesus as your Savior, your sins are remembered no more by Adonai your God!

What else comes with that?

Jesus says in Matthew 11
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

So let’s dig deeper on why God flooded the earth?

To judge the wickedness of man

Man is often tempted to question why evil and suffering exists in the world, for these occurrences can seem to be unfair. It isn’t our place as humans to judge the wickedness of man. God reminds us in His word that we are all sinners, and while it’s important to strive towards righteous acts and stand up against violence and injustice, ultimately it will be God who judges each individual as He sees fit. What we can do instead is learn to forgive one another in order to show compassion and understanding, allowing grace and mercy to lead our hearts. Faith and a close relationship with Adonai God can help believers remain patient in times of difficulty, trusting that their Heavenly Father will deliver justice according to His perfect plan. It’s not for us to understand but to trust Him in all things.

“Things which are hidden belong to Adonai our God. But the things that have been revealed belong to us and our children forever, so that we can observe all the words of this Torah.” Deuteronomy 29:29

A new beginning

Starting fresh with a new beginning can be challenging, but it is entirely possible to take the small steps necessary to do so. Don’t be afraid of change; it can be a good thing when it’s God’s plan for us. Trust Him. The Bible says, “

“Therefore, if anyone is united with the Messiah, he is a new creation—the old has passed; look, what has come is fresh and new!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Know that Jesus wants you to walk into this new relationship with Him and start anew. He will bless you and provide what you need to turn your life around and make powerful changes. Starting fresh means letting go of the old and focusing on the new that He has planned for you. Not only that, but it also empowers you to take bold action and develope healthy habits that will benefit you today as well as in years to come. Embrace each step with courage, allowing God’s grace and love to lead the way!

God’s power and might

In Psalm 62:11, Scripture reminds us that “God has spoken once, twice have I heard this; that power belongs to God.” This passage is a gentle reminder of God’s great power and might. Although the challenges that we may face in life can seem insurmountable, no issue is too much for Adonai. We can trust in His strength and guidance, turning our worries into prayerful reflections of faith. Knowing and understanding His power and greatness can lead us to lean on Him at all times, instead of relying solely upon our own understanding. By humbly submitting to God’s sovereign Will, He promises us peace in the midst of even our most trying moments. Though sometimes difficult to process, this trust brings with it joyous blessings that only come through faithfully leaving all of our cares in the loving hands of Adonai our God.

Jesus our Savior, the Messiah

As believers, it is comforting and encouraging to know that God saw our need to be saved and He sent His Son, Jesus the Messiah, to save us. In scripture, we are reminded that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). We can learn from this verse how much God loved us and how He thought of salvation for us so that we would know Him as our Savior. Every day, we should thank God for such an incredible gift and recognize the presence of Jesus in our lives. Although sometimes difficult, making every effort to humble ourselves before Him will bring peace and joy knowing He is always with us through the good and the bad.

Save us from ourselves

Throughout the scriptures, God’s love for us is described as incredibly deep and powerful. He does not want to see us defeated by life’s troubles, but instead provides us with a way for our own victories in life. As an act of love to save us from ourselves, God encourages us to keep turning towards Him in faith, even when we don’t understand what is happening in the world around us. He arms us with courage and boldness so that we can tackle anything ahead of us. His love and grace allows us to overcome any disability or weakness that may stand between us and our eternity. What a great God He is – an ever-faithful ally who saves us from ourselves!

In conclusion, there are five main reasons why God allows or even causes trials and tribulations in our lives. First, to judge the wickedness of man. Second, to start fresh with a new beginning – like after we repent from our sins. Third, to show His power and might so that we would know Him as our Savior. Fourth, as an act of love because He knows these trials can save us from ourselves instead of destroying us. And fifth, for His glory.

So when you go through tough times remember it is not because God doesn’t love you or hasn’t forgiven you; but rather because He loves you. Trust the Father in all circumstances, turn back to the Father if you have wandered away, repent, and study the whole Bible from Genesis 1:1 to the last word in Revelation.

God bless you.
