How do we know what to do, what to pray? How do we get to Heaven?
Who created the sinners prayer/salvation prayer? Did Jesus teach us? Who decided what that should be? Was that man-made or God-made?
Let’s investigate.
What does King David teach us?
Even God’s chosen ones can sin. God looks at the heart. When you sin, the Holy Spirit convicts you immediately. Your next move is extremely important; choose wisely. If you come to Jesus with a humble heart, repent and turn back to Him after you sin, He quickly forgives. God wants us to remain humble with a repentant heart at all times, and follow Him. King David teaches us repentance, humility, and that when we sin, we sin against our Creator, Adonai, the God of Heaven and earth. Our sins are NOT hidden from God. Let’s learn how to repent and turn from sin forever.
In Psalms chapter 51, we read about King David crying out to God to be forgiven and cleansed for his sins. He is our example. Let’s see what He said.
- Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God
- To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
- Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
- Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
- For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
- Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
- Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
- Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
- Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
- Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
- Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
- Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
- Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
- Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
- Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
- Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
- O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
- For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
- The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
- Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
- Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.” Psalms 51:1-19
King David cries out after his great sin because he knows exactly what he sacrificed by turning from God in his sin. He knew firsthand the love of God and he wanted it back. He realized right away that the moment of pleasure in that sin was not worth what he sacrificed in grieving God and affecting his relationship with God to get that pleasure. He repented, God forgave him, and David prayed that his mistake would help prevent others from doing the same thing.
Did lay-men take pieces of this and create a salvation prayer? Was David their influence?
First Step: Is Jesus the Son of God?
Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God that He sent to die for our sins? Believing this is key to your salvation. In John chapter 9, we learn of Jesus healing a man on the Sabbath that had been blind from birth. The man tells everyone that Jesus healed him. The people took him to the Pharisee leaders because of the miracle and that is was done on the Sabbath. They were very upset that this man was saying that Jesus had healed him. The man tried to explain what happened and Jesus had to be who He said He is or He could not have opened his eyes. It angered the leaders more that this man that they called a sinner was attempting to teach them about God. They cast him out of the synagogue for lying.
- “Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
- He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
- And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
- And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
- And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
- And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
- Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.” John 9:35-41
– Jesus taught us in this lesson that to believe He is who He says He is – is salvation.
– Jesus keeps it simple; man has complicated the process of salvation.
For those who are determined to remain in power and have people follow their man-made rules and commands and for those who follow them, will be blinded to God’s truth.
When you truly believe Jesus is who He says He is, you worship Him; only Him. He shows you truth when you believe. When you start seeing the truth, you are forever transformed. You no longer want to follow your old ways, the ways of the world. You have a burning desire to know more and learn more and get closer to Jesus. The closer you get to Him, the closer you want to get to Him. You get addicted to His love for you and the peace He washes you with. It’s intoxicating. God wants us to be addicted to His love.
…”The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:8-10

What does Jesus teach us to pray and how?
Jesus Do’s and Don’ts for prayer:
- And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
- But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
- But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
- Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.” Matthew 6:5-8
Pray like this: The Lord’s Prayer
- “After this manner therefore pray ye:
- Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
- Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
- Give us this day our daily bread.
- And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
- And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” Matthew 6-13
This is the prayer that Jesus Himself spoke to us to teach us how to pray. Is it the prayer for salvation? Is it only about what we should do? What is this prayer for?
Did you know that this prayer covers in summary, God’s Ten Commands that He gave Moses in Exodus 20? Jesus only spoke what His Father spoke. He did not come to abolish what God gave us but to uphold it. He has also told us that He already knows what we need before we pray. He wants us praying for others instead of ourselves. So what does that look like? Praying The Lord’s Prayer. In this prayer that He gave us, it covers everything from A-Z summarized neatly for us.
If we believe He is who He says He is, and we pray this prayer everyday and follow Him and His ways, we will be transformed and spend eternity with Him. The world has complicated the process that God and Jesus kept simple for us. Following Jesus and His ways are so simple; following the world’s ways are difficult to maintain and they don’t bring you the peace that a relationship with Jesus brings you. Choose Him today and pray this prayer; everyday.
What Jesus says about forgiveness:
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14-15
Who will get into Heaven?
Jesus tells us that we must have the faith of a child to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. How is that possible? To humble yourself before Him and allow Him to lead your life after you believe, repent, and invite Him into your heart. All things are possible with Jesus. Trust Him. (Matthew 19:26)
- “At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
- And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
- And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
- Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
- And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
- But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” Matthew 18:6
In summary,
I pray that this blog on what you need to do to be saved is clear to you now. Keep it simple; Jesus did.
